Free Essays on Mentally Ill Discrimination

In forty-seven out of the fifty great states in the US, there are laws that specifically set out to protect the mentally ill from discrimination in the workplace (Steckner 1). The problem is that Arizona does not classify a mental illness as an actual disability. The lack of sufficient laws has allowed corporations to unfairly discriminate against or terminate employees with mental impairments and leaves the employee without a real court case. If the current laws were sufficient, they would protect the mentally ill from job discrimination, provide on the job accommodations to make working easier, and in case of on-the-job discrimination, provide help in any lawsuit. In Arizona, any discrimination suit brought against an employer for a mental disability can not be prosecuted through the attorney general. They must go through the federal court system, which is often a much longer process that is much more expensive, and overall, inconvenient. Many bills have been introduced, hoping to change the laws, but they have been killed every time. Under the new proposed law, the term â€Å"mental impairment† will be added to the current disability law, covering mental illness as a disability. Also, under this law, the impaired would be afforded some reasonable job accommodations. According to the ADA, a â€Å"reasonable accommodation is a modification or an adjustment to a job or the work environment that will enable a qualified applicant or employee with a disability to participate in the application process or to perform essential job functions† (ADA 2). Employment is an important part of recovery and treatment for people with severe mental illnesses (NAMI 1-2). The problem with that is they are being discriminated against and without new laws to protect them, the discrimination will continue. Business owners are among those who are greatly opposed to the suggested laws. They are afraid of the idea of going to court and having to... What Makes a Good Book Cover The Secret to a Converting Book Cover

What Makes a Good Book Cover The Secret to a Converting Book Cover What Makes a Good Book Cover: How to Increase Book Sales With Your Book Cover Do you know what makes a good book cover? You shouldif you ever want to maintain consistent sales of your book.Ok, so here’s the deal. What I am just about to tell you might sound controversial. It might even sound downright ridiculous. You could even get offended. But bear with me for a while. Just hear me outbecause what I really want for you is to sell more books, and your book cover is one of the most important factors playing into that reality, even though weve all been told not to judge a book by its cover. The reality of publishing isEveryone does anyways.Heres what makes for a good book cover:Focusing on the big pictureStrong compositionAn intriguing focal pointClear title and subtitlesSimplistic book cover designNOTE: We cover everything in this blog post and much more about the writing, marketing, and publishing process in our VIP Self-Publishing Program. Learn more about it hereWhat does a good book cover matter? The book cover exists to serve one and only ONE purpose. And that purpose is to sell your book. Everything else is details.Shocked? Offended? About to pick that nearby glass of water and smash it on my head? Just hold it for a few minutes.I understand how we creatives hate the four-letter words starting with an S. Sell? Sale? Sold!? But it’s true. If you haven’t read Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad Poor Dad yet, I urge you to get a copy and read.Robert Kiyosaki was once being interviewed by this bright young journalist. She had a real flair for writing. She asked Robert if he had any advice for her. And guess what Robert told her. â€Å"Go take a sales course†, he said. The young lady was shocked. She sat there silently for a few minutes, staring at Robert Kiyosaki in disbelief. And then she spoke. She told him she had spent all her life writing and studying. She held master’s degrees in literature and journalism. And she had worked so hard all her life, so that she won’t have to â€Å"stoop so lowâ₠¬ as learning to sell! Robert explained how she was a far superior writer than Robert could ever hope to be, but Robert was still a best-selling author, while she wasn’t. She could write the best book ever written by a human being, but it wouldn’t matter if nobody read it.And that is why you need to â€Å"SELL†.Makes sense? I hope it does because as I mentioned above, your books cover is one of the most important pieces of becoming a successful author. What makes for a good book cover?I have been on that side of the fence where creatives hate the concept of selling or marketing. And I have been on that side for the longest time. But the sooner you get yourself comfortable with these words and concepts, the better. And the best way to start is by understanding that investing in a good book cover design, and knowing what makes a good one.And why should you even listen to me? Well, I have a bachelor’s degree in marketing. And trust me, I learned nothing at s chool. After my bachelors, I spent nearly ten years convincing myself and the world that I am an artist. And you know the funniest part? All of my creative buddies and peers were in the same situation. And that is when I decided I needed to learn what I had shunned for the longest time. I needed to learn to sell. We founded Dastaan Online. And the first business that needed our help was our own. We started publishing a literary magazine called Dastaan World.Writers, artists, photographers, even those who write poetry along with readers flocked to us. I decided to design covers for every story we published. And our contributors loved them!My covers might well be beautiful, and thought-provoking and sublime and what not. But that is all secondary. They keep coming to me, because my covers help them sell their books.Every other quality of a good book cover can be indented as a subcategory or explanation of this one point. The book cover is there to promote your book, and ultimately sell it. Now, the next big question is, what makes for a good book cover that achieves this goal?#1 Focus On the Big PictureThe book cover needs to draw the viewer into the story. Even if you are writing non-fiction. You are a writer, so you know there is always a story. The cover needs to show what the book is about, without giving all of it away, much like the book title but with visuals. This example from Self-Publishing Schools coach Marcy Pusey shows just how this technique works in her book, Weirdo and Willy. The idea is to get your reader to open the book. Once they open the book, your magic as a writer will not let them put it down before reading it to the end.But to catch in your spiderweb of literary magic, you need to use a bait. And that is what your cover needs to do for you. It needs to play on the human emotions of intrigue and curiosity. So think about the big picture of what your book cover should represent.Ask yourself these questions when figuring out your book cover:Doe s your idea represent your story or message?Does it illicit intrigue?Does it stand out from other books in your category?#2 Create a Strong CompositionThis is where is start to get into the wizardry that is graphic design and illustration.Composition is one of the most fundamental skills required of anyone working with visuals. And as with all fundamentals, the composition takes a lifetime to master, at least! This is why its advised to hire a book cover designer instead of creating the cover yourself in programs like Canva or Photoshop. But if you have some experience and want to go for it, here are some guidelines on composition:Use the rule of thirdsSymmetry is your friendUse texture and patterns to add non-distracting detailsUse high and low anglesCombine several composition tips into one for full-effect (but not ALL of them)But you can start off with a few interesting guidelines or you can simply hire a book editor whos experienced in the field of composition.#3 Develop a Clear Focal PointEvery composition, every piece of deliberately designed visual communication, needs a focal point. The easiest way to find your focal point is to ask yourself (or, preferably, a friend) where your eye goes first on this piece.Whether it’s the title, your author byline, a figure in the artwork, some specific abstract shape, your focal point is what grabs your attention and catches your eye the first. And it’s not accidental. In this example by Self-Publishing Schools Omer Redden, you can see that the focal point of his book Life Doc is very clearly and intentionally the eye-catching title. There’s a whole science behind this elusive art called composition. It is this magic skill that dictates where a viewer is going to look, and in what order. You can have multiple focal points, but they should not compete with each other. They grab your viewer’s attention in the order you have designed them. Primary, secondary, tertiary and so on.This dance of at tention depends on what story you want to plant in their head. This story will make them open your book and eventually decide to buy it.#4 Title, Subtitle and Their RelativesPlease don’t make the mistake of thinking your cover is completely at your designer’s mercy. No. You are the writer. And you play the key role in determining how well your cover is gonna perform. How? The book title! When trying to come up with a book title idea, ask yourself this: Will it pull your reader from across the store? Or the webpage? It should be compelling. It should be visible and readable.AND it should be strengthened further by any additional visual elements on your cover.  Self-Publishing School coach Scott Allans book Undefeated is a great example of this. Here you can see his title plays an integral role in the cover design as a whole, with a very telling message with the torn reveal of un in undefeatedYour title, and any subtitles and taglines are going to play a pivotal role i n selling your book. So get your inner Don Draper out when crafting your cover copy!#5 Simplistic Book Cover DesignAnd finally, I like to keep my covers simple. And I personally tend to like covers that are simple and minimalistic.Although, my covers may sometimes look complex because of all the digitally painted and photo-manipulated detail, the ideas and composition must remain simple. It all goes in favor of the focal point and our intention to just say enough that will compel our viewer to buy the book.Overly complex covers usually give a very blatant impression of desperation, where the designer didn’t exactly know what to put in. And hence, they put everything they could think of in there. Not cool. Don’t do this. Keep it simple! So when you decide to finally lock down your book cover, remember to keep it simple stupid. Keep the big picture of your story in mind.Make your viewers focus on the key selling points of your book. If you feel stumped about your book co ver design, you can always reach out to a professional for help. If youre a student of Self-Publishing School, youll even be provided a list of cover designers whose work already checks the boxes of this list. You can see a little preview of this below:Just keep these guidelines in mind, whether you are designing the cover yourself, or paying someone to do it for you.Ready to get serious about selling your book?If youre ready to actually have success with your book (instead of hitting publish and hearing crickets from no book sales), we have the tried-and-true methods to help you get there.

Financial Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Financial - Essay Example Businesses should therefore choose the most suitable accounting method. This paper prescribes the accrual basis of accounting over the cash basis. There are several plus of using the accrual accounting method over the cash method. While the accrual method recognizes income and expenses in the immediate period, the cash basis recognizes income and expenses in relation to real-time cash flow. In fact, in the case of cash accounting, income is recorded when funds are received while expenses are recorded when paid rather than as they actually occur. The major advantage of accrual accounting over cash accounting is that it lays a great weight on the period in which expenses and incomes apply, whether money has changed hand or not (McQuaig et al). In this regard, the accrual system records the period in which money is earned instead of when payment is made as in the case of cash basis of accounting. That is, while payment may be made long after a job is completed, the accrual basis of accounting would recognize the period in which the work was done. The accrual method thus offers a clearer and more accurate picture on the long-term performance of a business compared to the cash basis (Palmer et al., 1999). The accrual method is also suggested for businesses that deal with inventory, be they small retailers to big

Mini project Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words - 1

Mini project - Essay Example However, using immobilized enzymes very small size makes it difficult to separate them out of the product. Therefore, industries generally optimize the reaction rate and the ease of separation while determining which particle size to employ. The present report explores how various process parameters influence the particle size of chitosan microspheres. Data has been collected on how various parameters determine the size of immobilized enzyme particles. It should however be noted that data will exhibit variability even though the investigation is carried out under the same test conditions because the particle shape may not always be a perfect sphere and thus the measurement may have some degree of variability depending on particle position during measurement. The experiment is aimed at determining the conditions required for making a chitosan enzyme particle of a specific size by employing statistical techniques. Four parameters have been incorporated because of their influence on par ticle size, namely – Tween 80 concentration, stirring rate, glutaraldehyde concentration and chitosan concentration. As seen in table 1, different particle sizes of chitosan obtained for two different stirring rates. For speeds at 1000rpm, three peaks have been found, at 0.40, 0.41 and 0.43. This may be indicative of contamination in the sample. Similarly for stirring rate of 500rpm, peaks were observed at 0.38 and 0.40. The data for both stirring rates appeared to be skewed towards a smaller particle size. The particle diameter ranged between 0.381 and 0.441 for stirring rate of 500rpm, and between 0.386 and 0.453 for stirring rate of 1000rpm. The plot for 500rpm stirring rate has a lift value at 0.4065, lesser than that for 1000rpm. It can be seen from the plot that 75% of data on lift is between the values of 0.3955 and 0.419 while the values for good data should lie between 0.36025 and 0.45425. The plot for 1000rpm

Reigniting Your Passion for God Essay Example for Free

Reigniting Your Passion for God Essay The creative force behind all great art, all great drama, all great music, all great architecture and all great writing is passion. Nothing great is ever accomplished in life without passion. Nothing great is ever sustained in life without passion. Passion is what energizes life. Passion makes the impossible possible. Passion gives you a reason to get up in the morning and go and say, I’m going to do something with my life today. Without passion life becomes boring. It becomes monotonous. It becomes routine. It becomes dull. God created you with the emotions to have passion in your life and He wants you to live a passionate life for Him. Passion is what mobilizes armies into action. Passion is what causes explorers to boldly go where no man’s gone before. Passion is what causes scientists to spend late night hours trying to find the cure to a dreaded disease. Passion is what takes a good athlete and turns him or her into a great athlete where they’re breaking records. You’ve got to have passion in your life. One day a man walks up to Jesus and he says, Lord, what’s the most important thing in the Bible? And you know what the Great Commandment is. We’ve talked about it many times. Jesus said, I want you to love God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. Nothing matters more than that. That’s the number one thing in life. I want you to love Me passionately. Nothing else matters in life if you don’t love God with passion. God doesn’t want you to love Him half-heartedly. He wants you to love Him with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind and all your strength. I love the paraphrase of that verse, Mark 11:30, from The Message Jesus said, ’Love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy. Circle the word passion. That word, in Greek, is the word heart. God is saying I want you to put some muscle into it, put some energy, put some emotion into your relationship with Me. Don’t be a wimp about your relationship with Me. Don’t be namby-pamby. Don’t be half-hearted. Give it all you’ve got. Jesus is saying, If you’re going to follow Me, you’ve got to go it with passion. You’ve got to give it some oomph, some spark, some zip, some enthusiasm, some zest. In other words I want you to live your life with me passionately. In fact, this truth is all through the Bible. The Bible tells us that we’re to seek God passionately. We’re to love God passionately. The Bible says that we’re to serve and obey God passionately. We’re to trust God passionately. Then as if you didn’t get the message, in Colossians 3:23 He says Whatever you do, do it with all of your heart as unto the Lord and not unto men. He says I want you to do everything passionately when it comes to loving Me, serving Me, living for Me. Here’s the amazing thing. In America it’s ok to be passionate about anything except God. That is not politically correct to be passionate about God. I can be passionate about movies. I can be passionate about sports. I can be passionate about politics. I can be passionate about fashions and clothes. I can be passionate about restaurants. But I cannot be passionate about God. That’s a no-no. I typed in the phrase a passion for into Amazon.com and found a couple hundred books with that title. There’s a book call A Passion for Birds, A Passion for Books, A Passion for Cactus, A Passion for Chocolate (that’s understandable), A Passion for Fashion, for Fishing for Flying, for Gardening, Golf, Hunting. There’s even a book called A Passion For Mushrooms. A Passion for Needlepoint, Pasta, Ponies. There’s a book called, A Passion for Potatoes, for Roses, for Shoes. There’s even a book called A Passion for Steam. I can’t figure out what that one’s all about! I don’t know why you’d get passionate about steam. But in our culture today it’s ok to be passionate about anything except your religion, except your faith, except your relationship with God. I can go to a concert, or a political rally or a baseball game and I can shout my head off. I can get excited. I can get hoarse from yelling so loud. When my team loses I could cry. Nobody thinks that’s a big deal. When my team wins I can jump up and dance around and wave my hands in the air. If I do that at a game people go, He’s a real fan! But if I do that in church people say, He’s a fanatic! He’s a nut case. You don’t want to get too emotional about your faith. Its ok about anything else but not that. Romans 12:1 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor. Keep the fires going in your life. Circle the word keep. Notice, it’s not automatic. It’s a choice. It’s a discipline. It’s something you must maintain. You are not by nature passionate about God. It’s something that you must choose to do. You get distracted and everything in life conspires to keep you from being passionate about God. So He says keep your passion going. Keep the fires going. It’s a discipline. It’s not just automatic. This kind of thing being passionate about God has nothing to do with either your personality or your age. Our churches are filled with hundreds if not thousands of senior believers who have walked with God a long, long time and are still passionate. But everything in life conspires to keep you from being passionate. And it dissipates your energy. When you first become a believer and you really understand what a good deal you’ve got you get excited about it, This is quite a big deal! All my sins were forgiven. I now have a purpose for living, and I now have a future home in heaven. What a deal! And you get excited about that when you give your life to Christ and you’re pretty passionate. But as time goes by you begin to lose your steam. You begin to lose your zip, your zest, your enthusiasm. What happened? Why does that happen? That’s what we’re going to look at today. As we go through God’s word we’re going to look at seven passion killers, things that rob the joy out of your life. I thought this would be a very appropriate message, right in the middle of winter, when nobody feels very passionate about much of anything. You want the warmth of summer back. So this morning we’re going to look at these passion killers together. I want you to use it as a checklist. Because God says, I want you to love Me with all of your heart.

A True Hero in the Poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Essay examples

A True Hero in the Poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight "What makes a man a hero? Where lies the line which, when crossed, changes a mortal man into a legend? World leaders of our generation are mockeries of real men, more like Pilates than Thomas Mores." ( Gagne) In the poem of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the definition of a hero is clearly explained. Gawain is faced with trials and tribulations throughout the poem, but what clearly defines the crossover from man to hero? "Tests and decisions are as numerous in any man's life as are the beats of his heart." ( Gagne) But what draws the line between a man and a hero is what he learns from life's lessons. " In destines sad or merry, True men can but try." ( Gawain) " It tells a reader that Gawain means to do his level best in ...

Beautiful Mind Reflection Paper

Delusions are fixed false ideas that are not based in reality an example was when John saw his boss telling him to kill his wife and the wife had to quickly ran out of the house. Illusions are false perceptions of real stimulus, he actually was misrepresenting things he sees around that they are harmful to him so he is always ready to attack. Hallucinations are false sensory inputs with no external stimulus, it may take the form of smells, sounds, tastes, sight, touch, or feelings of altered internal workings of the body. Assessment Pertinent questions to ask the patient having hallucinations are as follows: ask the patient if he sees things when other people are not present, ask how many different voices does the patient hear, what do the voices ask the patient to do, ask if the patient recognize any of the voices, what the voices ask him to do and how does he/ she feel about the voices. John Nash’s other schizophrenic behaviors in graduate school makes him to see things differently from others, he was not associating himself thus he couldn’t make any friends, an example was during a party were everyone were drinking and chatting he was only able to see the dazzling glasses with the rays of light on it, also at a bar he said something annoying to a lady that was looking for a date or probably someone to buy her a drink and the girl was angry, gave him a slap and walked away out of the bar. His schizophrenia affect his â€Å"self talk† because he was always talking to himself because he was see a friend he thought was real and interacting with. John basically could not take care of his body, he is lacking self care deficit-bathing and I think John is having a disorganized subtype of schizophrenia because of his disorganized thinking, speech, and behavior; also he is socially inept and unable to perform activities of daily living. Nursing diagnoses Risk for self directed violence related to reality distortion as evidenced in the patient impulsive behaviors that could result in self harm and harm to others. Social isolation related to maladaptive social behavior as evidenced in the patient repetitive meaningless behaviors or behavior unacceptable to significant others. Goal Goals pertinent for John is to be able to develop ways to be more involved with others in an appropriate way and to develop a more satisfying relationship. Nursing interventions When John was taken away he strike the psychiatrist because he did not want to be sent for treatment and he was been angry as a result of his disordered thinking and loosely organized hallucinations. This type of schizophrenic symptoms is dangerous because he might be hearing voices that tells him to harm others or even himself. Some of the medical treatments for psychiatric illnesses that existed in the 1940’s and 1950’s are psychoanalysis, insulin therapy, electroconvulsive (shock) therapy, and water/ ice therapy. John received the insulin therapy while he was hospitalized. After discharge from the hospital, John is taking Thorazine and the reasons he had for â€Å"cheeking† his pills and stock piling them in the drawer was because whenever he takes his pills he won’t be able to respond to his wife or function effectively as a man of the house. It is important to assess the client’s mouth after taking his medication so as to be sure the client actually swallowed the pills and not hide them in his cheeks. Supporting significant others Alicia did not have any support system or help in caring for her husband when he returned from the hospital. Planning The nursing diagnosis that would describe Alicia as she care for a new baby and a mentally ill husband is Care giver role strain. The intervention that could be implemented to help Alicia and John is to encourage Alicia to identify available family and friends who can assist with caregiving. The short term discharge goal for John is that he would take his medication at the required time of the day everyday; John will be able to relate with his wife and significant others appropriately. Implementation The advantage that modern drugs like Olanzapine have over the older drugs like chlorpromazine(Thorazine) is that Thorazine are low potency antipsychotics while Olanzapine exhibits strong adrenergic and anticholinergic blocking action effective for aggressive behaviors in schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. An increase in temperature is a cause for concern because it can make the client taking antipsychotics physical condition to decline rapidly and this adverse reaction is called Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), also respiratory or urinary tract side effects would be worrisome because these are signs of autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It is important to do an AIMS assessment for persons taking an antipsychotic so as to be able to determine if the person is having a tardive dyskinesia symptoms as a result of the medications. AIMS stands for Abnormal involuntary movement scale. Evaluations In the last scene, as John is walking up to get his noble prize the extrapyramidal side effects he does have from a long term antipsychotic use is tardive dyskinesia and a prophylactic antiparkinson drugs may be prescribed to combat the adverse effects from antipsychotics such as haloperidol (haldol). Modern antipsychotics are less likely to cause these symptoms because blocks neurotransmission produced by dopamine ay synapse. Reflection I was really surprised to get to know towards the end of the movie that Charles was imagined and I didn’t actually know what to believe was real an unreal about John’s life. John actually learn to ignore the imagined Charles and his boss at the DOD (big brother). Infact it is really pathetic to know that a mentally ill person see things that doesn’t even exist and that attributes a lot to the abnormal behaviors they exhibit when they are with people. I think a mentally ill person wouldn’t believe those things are just imagination and that might make them very aggressive when it seems people don’t understand them or see things and hear voices they do hear.

Event Planning Essay

The chapter 3 of Allen`s Chapter talk about the communication objectives and targeting issues. As the starting point of event planning, the second step is setting communication objectives based on situation analysis and fit with corporate and market objectives. While setting a communication objective, planner could use some tools such as gap analysis and Ansoff matrix within the SMART rules; meanwhile, the objective should follow the communication theory. After that, planner should try to determine and describe target audiences in order to segment these targets. At last, the author segments the target in different lights: individual and decision-making unit, reference groups and opinion leaders etc. Therefore the event planner should take the most appropriate method, media and message to communicate with each group. In the event planning, the author provides some method to manage the information and timing. The author emphasize the important of task controlling—critical path, and provide two tools for event managing—function sheets and contact sheets. As the event planning is a time & detail sensitive matter, it is better to summarize and map the whole path through charting. Experience application When I worked in BBDO china, I have participated in the launch event of MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS (JCW). As the most performance in MINI vehicle family, MINI wishes to promote the JOHN COOPER WORKS as the highest class which is similar as BMW M1, which could fill in the gap of marketplace for MINI; meanwhile, because the stereotype to MINI`s driver (MINI always be regard as a female car in china), MINI hope to extend the target market to male group. Therefore, the corporate objective of MINI JCW is to fill in the gap of high class level; the market objective is â€Å"high class, high price, high performance† with extending the potential target consumer. For the communication objective, BBDO use research tools to check with the existing product, which shows that other series of MINI are always describe as smart, innovation, graceful and fancy, which have less relevant with the â€Å"masculine  image†; At the market place aspect, over 60% of drivers are female, that is to say, there are a large group of potential consumer—male group. Belonging to the higher class objective, the agency of MINI china, BBDO, decided to set the communication objective: combine the high performance feature with masculine image; make the MINI JCW as a strong and muscle car. As the highest performance car of the vehicle world is racing car, BBDO develop the theme of the communication: â€Å"Racing is in our blood.† Unlike the traditional promotion, BBDO took the inviting test driving as the main program of the launch event, and held it in the Shanghai Racing field; besides, MINI promote in multimedia: guerilla, OOH, advertorial, and on line teaser, which also emphasis this theme.

Price Ceilings Are Useless essays

Price Ceilings Are Useless essays Even dough I had to argue in favor of price ceilings, I hate price ceilings. Researching on the internet I couldnt find a good thing. (The example that I put in the presentation with the rice and everything is not good because the $ spent by the gov paying for water only to plant those plants is more than the whole harvest) Also in an article by by Roger Ream who is Director of Seminars of The Foundation for Economic Education he said that despite the economic knowledge that price ceiling makes suppliers not to fabricate as much and that this causes shortages and that this shortages pushes the prices higher than before. The government is still using price ceiling because they want to be in control. He also says that the government should stop this because they are hurting the people that already are hurt. Hurting the poor. Despite overwhelming economic knowledge that price controls (in this discussion, ceilings on prices) discourage suppliers, thus causing shortages and therefore eventually pushing prices above their free market levels, the clamor for controls never subsides. A plea on behalf of the poor is perhaps the loudest excuse for ignoring economic wisdom and imposing controls. This emotional appeal to the plight of the poor often blinds individuals from seeing things as they really are, rather. Controls lead to a less efficient employment of scarce resources, and this hurts the poor the most. It is those on the bottom of the economic ladder who have the greatest stake in efforts to create the most opportunities, goods, and services from limited resources. The effect of price controls will be shortages and eventually prices higher than they would be in an unhampered market; effects precisely contrary to the stated objectives of their supporters. ( Roger Ream) Rent controls in large cities are a type of price ceiling. The government says you cannot raise the price above the...

Spanish Indefinite Determiners

Spanish Indefinite Determiners When they come before nouns, words such as some and any part of a vaguely defined class of words known as indefinite determiners. (A determiner is often classified as a type of adjective.) Such determiners usually function much the same in Spanish as they do in English, coming before the nouns they refer to. More precisely, indefinite determiners are defined as nondescriptive words that refer to, or specify the quantity of, nouns without a specific identity. How Indefinite Determiners Are Used in Spanish Like most other adjectives and determiners, in Spanish the indefinite determiners match the nouns they refer to in both number and gender. The one exception is cada, meaning each or every, which is invariable, keeping the same form whether the accompanying noun is singular or plural, masculine or feminine. Again with the exception of cada, which is always a determiner, the indefinite determiners sometimes function as pronouns. For example, while ninguna persona is the equivalent of no person, ninguno standing alone is a pronoun typically translated as nobody. List of Common Indefinite Determiners Here are the most common indefinite adjectives along with their common translations and sample sentences: Algà ºn, Alguna, Algunos, Algunas The base form of alguno, typically meaning some or one (although not as a number), is shortened to algà ºn with it precedes a singular masculine noun through apocopation and thus is listed that way here. The equivalent pronoun, usually translated as someone, retains the form of alguno. In plural form, the translation some is usually used. Algà ºn dà a voy a Espaà ±a. (One day, Im going to Spain.)Tiene algunos libros. (He has some books.)Algunas canciones ya no estn disponibles. (Some songs still arent available.) Cada Cada can be translated as either of the synonyms each or every. A common phrase, cada uno, abbreviated as c/u, is used for apiece. Cada dà a voy a la oficina. (I go to the office every day.)Tenemos un libro por cada tres estudiantes. (We have one book for every three students.)Puedes comprar boletos por 25 pesos cada uno. (You can buy tickets for 25 pesos apiece.) Cierto, Cierta, Ciertos, Ciertas Although the singular cierto and cierta translates the English a certain, they are not preceded by un or una. In plural form, they are the equivalent of certain as an determiner. Quiero comprar cierto libro. (I want to buy a certain book.)El problema ocurre cuando cierta persona me cree. (The problem happens when a certain person believes me.)Ciertas estudiantes fueron a la biblioteca. (Certain students went to the library.) Cierto and its variations can also be used as a regular adjective after nouns. It then typically means true or accurate. Estar cierto is used for to be certain.) Cualquier, Cualquiera Translations for cualquier and cualquiera before a noun include any, whatever, whichever, whoever, and whomever. Cualquier estudiante puede aprobar el examen. (Any student can pass the test.)Estudia a cualquier hora. (He studies at whatever time.) As a pronoun, cualquiera is used for either masculine or feminine: Prefiero cualquiera de ellos a Pedro. (I prefer whichever one of them to Pedro.) A plural form, cualesquiera, which is both masculine and feminine, exists but is seldom used. When cualquiera is used after the noun, it emphasizes that the specific identity of the noun is unimportant, somewhat like any old in English: Podemos viajar a una ciudad cualquiera. (We can travel to any old city.) Ningà ºn, Ninguna Ningà ºn and ninguna, meaning no or not any, can be thought of as the opposite of alguno and its forms. Although these words are singular, a plural is often used in translation to English. No quiero ningà ºn libro. (I dont want any books. Note how Spanish requires a double negative here.)Ninguna mujer puede salir. (No women can leave.) The plural forms, ningunos and ningunas, exist but are seldom used. Otro, Otra, Otros, Otras Otra and its other forms almost always mean other. A common mistake of Spanish students is to copy another by preceding otro or otra with un or una, but no un or una is needed. Quiero otro lpiz. (I want another pencil.)Otra persona lo harà a. (Another person would do it.)Quiero comprar los otros libros. (I want to buy the other books.) Todo, Toda, Todos, Todas Todo and its related forms are the equivalent of each, every, all, or all of. Todo estudiante conoce al seà ±or Smith. (Every student knows Mr. Smith.)Corrieron a toda velocidad. (They ran at full speed.)Todos los estudiantes conocen al seà ±or Smith. (All of the students know Mr. Smith.)Durmià ³ toda la noche. (She slept all night.) Varios, Varias When placed before a noun, varios and varias mean several or a few. Comprà ³ varios libros. (She bought several books.)Hay varias soluciones. (There are several solutions.) As a regular adjective after the noun, varios/varias can mean varied, different or various.) Translating ‘Any’ to Spanish Note that some of these determiners can be translated as any. However, it also is common that when an English sentence is translated to Spanish, no equivalent of any is needed.  ¿Tienen ustedes libros? (Do you have any books?)No tenemos dificultades. (We arent having any difficulties.) Key Takeaways A determiner a type of adjective placed before a noun to indicate that the noun doesnt refer to a specific person or thing. Most Spanish determiners are variable for number and gender. Most of the Spanish determiners can also function as pronouns.

Riggs v.Palmer and Speluncean Explorers Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Riggs v.Palmer and Speluncean Explorers - Essay Example Fearing that his grandfather might change his decision in respect of the will Elmer Palmer murdered his grandfather through poisoning. The plaintiffs presented the argument that the will would allow Elmer to profit from his heinous crime. Elmer would be punished under the statute for murder but his claim to the estate could not be invalidated under the terms of either probate law or criminal law (Dworkin). In sharp contrast, the Speluncean Explorers case is purely hypothetical in nature and was written by Lon Fuller for the Harvard Law Review in 1949. A team of five entrapped spelunkers is depicted in the Commonwealth of Newgarth who are able to establish radio contact with their rescue team. The spelunkers are told by the engineers that around 10 days would be required for their extraction (Suber) while the spelunkers relate the total food rations they have to the physicians in the rescue team which are deemed insufficient. Radio contact breaks down and resultantly the spelunkers decide to hold a lottery in order to murder one of their members so that others can consume him for survival. The losing member is executed and eaten up. After the rescue the spelunkers are all convicted for murder but there is debate as to the application of murder sentences to the rescued spelunkers (Fuller). For Riggs v Palmer the majority opinion clearly stated that the plaintiffs were justified in their claims and the eventual outcome reinforced Judge Robert Earl’s opinion. The decision declared that the tenets of universal laws and universal maxims would be violated if Elmer Palmer was allowed to profit from his crime. It was also related that the legislature could not reasonably be expected to foresee any contingencies when laws were being drafted and so such disdainful behavior ought to be punished. This is similar to the views of Justice Keen in the Speluncean Explorers case where he opines that the statutes of law must be upheld in any circumstances no matter what the
